Use
COCCIOPESTO MORTAR is a natural and ecological masonry mortar for both interior and exterior use made with non hydraulic lime and crushed terra cotta. Two granulometries are available: Coarse COCCIOPESTO MORTAR with crushed terracotta 0-3mm and Fine COCCIOPESTO MORTAR with crushed terracotta 0-1mm.
COCCIOPESTO MORTAR which was developed by the Romans was used formerly like hydraulic coats. COCCIOPESTO MORTAR is always used in the restoration of Venice. By its properties, the crushed terracotta allows the realization of a more resistant mortar. COCCIOPESTO MORTAR is particularly used in the renovation and the restoration where it requires mortar with excellent mechanical and chemical properties, little withdrawal and much adhesion on the supports; because the hydrometric regulation is supported by its capillarity giving a good elastic module. COCCIOPESTO MORTAR is also used to gather stones and bricks, giving to constructions more elasticity. It is ideal to be used on old supports.
Application
Surface preparation
Interior and exterior surfaces should be in conformity with the current standards in force. The surfaces should be homogeneously absorbent, sound, clean, dry, nonfriable and free of salts, moisture and moulds.
In the case of high temperatures and on absorbent funds, it is advised to humidify the supports with clean water.
Application
Mix COCCIOPESTO MORTAR with approximately 0,3-0,4 lt/kg water with a mixer, or a concrete-mixer. Mix well before the application. Application by casting on with a trowel, equalize it before its complete drying with a sponge float, wooden or plastic trowel. According to the thickness, it is dry and recoverable after approximately 48h. In the case of thickness higher than 1 cm for the Fine COCCIOPESTO MORTAR and 3 cm for the Coarse COCCIOPESTO MORTAR, apply this lime mortar in several coats while waiting for the precedent coat to be dried.
Coverage
Coarse COCCIOPESTO MORTAR : approx. 1 kg/m ² per mm thickness per coat of mixed product
Fine COCCIOPESTO MORTAR : approx. 1 kg/m ² per mm thickness per coat of mixed product
Drying - carbonation
Where humidity, condensation or water-vapor is present, efflorescence, whitening, variations in color and fading may occur on surfaces that are not totally carbonated. Protect the end result from any rain for several days. To accelerate carbonation after the lime mortar has thoroughly dried, we recommend that you spray the surface gently from bottom to top with clean water using a low pressure spray. Avoid any streaming. Repeat this several times, leaving time to dry in between each spraying.
Practical advice
Clean all tools with water immediately after use.
Apply and store at a temperature of +5°C to +30°C (40°F or 85°F).
Do not apply to hot or damp surfaces or those directly exposed to the sun, or in the wind or the rain.
Each wall section should be finished the same day. All overlapping should be done in corners or door angles.
Protect the surrounding areas from splashes or clean with water immediately.
Health caution
Irritating to the eyes and skin. COCCIOPESTO MORTAR contains non hydraulic lime. Avoid contact with eyes. In case of contact with the eyes, rinse well with fresh water and contact a specialist if any symptoms persist. Avoid prolonged contact with skin. Keep out of the reach of children.
Storage advice
COCCIOPESTO MORTAR will keep for one year in its original packaging. Protect from frost, humidity and high temperatures.
Because COCCIOPESTO MORTAR contains crushed terra cotta which gives hydraulic properties, once mixed with water apply within 1 day.
